Who is behind the Ligonier Ministries? ›

Ligonier Ministries draws from the doctrinal riches of the historic Christian faith that have been passed down through the centuries, and we submit to the Bible alone as our only infallible rule for faith and practice.

R.C. Sproul was a determined Calvinist, who saw himself as an heir of the great reformer John Calvin, and others in the reformed tradition such as B.B. Warfield and John Gerstner.

Ligonier Ministries is an independent ministry and as such not itself a denomination. The have support from many denominations across the Reformed Tradition of Christianity. Reformed traditions are those that trace their philosophical and theological lineage from John Calvin.

The fight for self-control is suffused with great spiritual warfare. Dr. R.C. Sproul spoke candidly of this when he described in a sermon his difficulty in quitting smoking as a young believer. He said that he painted a picture of Jesus on the front side of a package of cigarettes to dissuade himself from smoking.

He was ordained as an elder in the United Presbyterian Church in the USA in 1965, but left that denomination around 1975 and joined the Presbyterian Church in America. He was also a Council member of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals.

The short answer is that the ministry began as a study center near a small town called Ligonier in Western Pennsylvania. Dr. Sproul was born and raised in the Pittsburgh area, so it was natural for him to begin his public ministry there.

Churches began using teaching series from Ligonier in their Christian education programs. The distance learning aspect of Ligonier quickly eclipsed the small study center effort, so in the early 1980s Ligonier relocated to Orlando, Florida, accommodating an expansion of the ministry.

Ligonier Ministries began as the Ligonier Valley Study Center in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. In time, the ministry's name was changed to Ligonier Ministries.
