Personalism versus Totalitarianism: Dietrich von Hildebrand’s Philosophical-Political Project

Dietrich von Hildebrand perceived his mission as defending the values of “Christian occident” understood as the cultural formation. The concept of the human person, whose dignity is rooted in God, was at the core of his vision of European culture. The main topic of the article will be Dietrich von Hildebrand’s relentless exposure of the inherent evil of national socialism as the principal danger to German, Christian and European culture. His attitude towards Hitler’s regime, and its underlying ideology was rooted in Christian personalism. It was deep and far-sighted and basically unquestionable, even heroic. Hildebrand adopted the same approach towards the Stalinist system in the Soviet Russia, which well deserved such treatment. Further course of events only confirmed the rightness of his unequivocal condemnation of totalitarianism. However, Hildebrand’s unconditional support for Dollfuss’ authoritarian regime and equally unconditional condemnation of Austrian social democracy cannot be accepted without any reservation – at best they are disputable. There is a question whether authoritarian reforms of Engelbert Dollfuss, were compatible with personalistic concept of man. The second question is whether Austrian social democracy deserved to be classified as Bolshevism and equalized with the Soviet Communism. Hildebrand’s approval (even if mixed with criticism) of Mussolini’s Fascist rule also requires examination on the issue of its consistency with the personalist principle. Another element deserving attention is Hildebrand’s view of the role of the German nation, as well as his concept of the genius of the nation and the analogies between the individual person and the nation. Finally, the contemporary relevance of Hildebrand’s philosophical-political project will be discussed.

This thesis examines the League of Nations’ project for Austrian financial reconstruction 1922- 1926. By 1922, the First Austrian Republic (1918-1938) was experiencing enormous problems, including hyperinflation. Little confidence existed that the country could survive as a unified and independent entity. In this context, the Economic and Financial Organisation (EFO) of the League designed a financial reconstruction scheme for Austria. The scheme was the first such project carried out by an international institution and this thesis explores its genesis, attributes and impacts. This thesis argues that this programme came into existence less, as is sometimes argued, because of the work of idealistic internationalists at the League of Nations, and more because the governments, diplomats and officials of certain powers, particularly France, but also Britain and others, wished to see Austria survive because they regarded its continued existence to be an important part of upholding post-w...
