Retired Faulkner County Judge GERALD L. WARD, 80, passed away peacefully surrounded by family members on April 18, succumbing to coronary disease. He was preceded in death by his mother, Rosa Gertrude French Ward; and father, William Stanford (Monroe) Ward. He is survived by his wife of 18 years,Blanche Morrison Ward; three sons, Jerry Don and wife Sharon Ward of Damascus, Joe and wife Diane Ward of Conway, and Tracy and wife Patricia Ward of Atkins; two stepdaughters, Peggy and husband Cactus Pryor of Austin, Texas, and Trisha and husband Art Norris of Little Rock; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Damascus.

Judge Ward was raised in Bee Branch, Ark., where he learned the value of country living. There, he learned lessons in common sense and hard work that guided his life through enormous accomplishments. For much of his life he was a dairy farmer in Damascus. In 1977, he was elected to the position of Faulkner County Judge, a position he held for 14 years. While in office, he was given national awards in recognition for his innovative, costsaving approaches to county government. He brought his country-learned skills to bear on solving long-standing problems, one of which was the huge number of old wooden bridges throughout the County. He purchased used railroad flat-cars and converted them into bridges. He also was honored for his design of what was called a "rainbow" bridge, a concrete arch that he used to span numerous small creeks and drainage areas.

His problem-solving abilities alone would have been enough to make him a very good public servant. However, Judge Ward possessed other character assets that made him indeed a rare public official and a rare human being. Those who worked with him were amazed at his complete honesty and lack of deceit. He simply did not hold grudges nor did he hold people's political positions against them. He accepted everyone and would give freely of his time and assets to help others. He was especially fond of helping young people. His love of young people and his love of baseball combined to provide many years of coaching ... coaching baseball and coaching life.

In retirement, Judge Ward's favorite activity was delighting in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He would talk at length about their accomplishments and their qualities. He also loved to fish and enjoyed having fish fries with family and friends. He also spent time raising muscadines and blackberries, and he developed three properties into housing developments. He and Blanche traveled frequently and enjoyed seeing this Country. In all of that, he continuously made friends and loved to talk to anyone he met.

Visitation will be at Central Baptist Church in Conway on Friday, April 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. A celebration of thanksgiving for the gift of Gerald Ward in so many people's lives will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 21, also at Central Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to Central Baptist Church, First Baptist Church of Damascus or Cove Chapel Baptist, in Martinville, Ark. Arrangements are by Roller-Mcnu*tt Funeral Home of Conway.
